If you are an active couple like my wife and I were, don't let others tell you that everything will change and you will be stuck in the house until your baby is older. Here are a few tips my wife and I learned about how to successfully eat at a restaurant with our baby, without having to pick up and leave when she became fussy.
The first thing you have to do is to learn when your baby is the most fussy and to avoid eating out during these times. For our daughter, she usually was quite fussy between seven and eight o'clock at night. Therefore, we usually tried to go out to dinner much earlier than these times, to avoid any of her screaming fits while we were trying to enjoy a meal.
Secondly, any time you're heading to a restaurant, you will want to be fully prepared for your baby. Always ensure that you take along either breast milk or formula to feed her if she gets hungry. I can't tell you how many times this saved us and allowed my wife and I to enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. Of course you always want to take along your diaper bag as well, as you never know when your baby is going to need a quick change.
You also want to try and work out a system for whenever your baby becomes fussy. Whenever our daughter became fussy or hungry, my wife and I had a simple plan for how to handle this scenario. As an example, if our daughter became hungry while we were in the middle of a meal, I would feed her while my wife ate. My wife would then burp her while I got to finish my meal. It was simple and effective.
Eating out with your baby does present its challenges, but I can tell you with all the confidence in the world that the more you do it, the easier it will become!
