Who Is Your Favorite Hero?

Over a period of time, fantasy characters had been present in our culture, homes and schools. Fabtasy characters has pervade children's lives. Kids of the world today are hooked on cartoons and characters in story. According to some parentsand teachers, cartoon characters can be comforting to the children. Probably, they can be a source of motivation to the kids but like a junk food, those characters are very enticing to the eye but it is empty of real value. They displace what is important, they fill the kids up with ideas that covers the reality. Basically, it hinders the children to know the reality and stops them from growing as responsible and mature individuals.

Nowadays, children and even teenagers are so fascinated with fad fantasy figures-the popular rock icon, the most valuable basketball player, there's the power rangers and others. Today, it is not surprising to hear the answers of the young people when ask this question "Who is your favorite hero?" Most possible answers are television personalities, rock star, and athletes of different spors. Only few real heroes would be mentioned, no great artists, inventors, humanitarians, composers, scientist, doctor and political leaders. This infusionof children and adolescent about the value of real human accomplishments is convincing.

In our generation, lots of people do not know what is a hero, many do not understand what a positive influence a hero can give in a person's life. A hero is an individual who can serve as an example to persevere and overcome hurdles of lifethat impede others' lives. We look up to a hero/heroine acts as an inspiration. Their accomplishments make us feel good and proud. Our heroes can be figures from the past and those that in present struggling to overcome personal and societal problems to build a better world. Heroes are everywhere, unfortunately we only knew a few of them. We allowe great people to be removed from our minds. They were being neglected and considered "persona non grata" istead of person of importance.

Schools and homes should put importance of the inclusion of heroes in children's lives. Its presence will provide children to have focus on thier dreans and wishes. Instill in the children's mind the true heroes, bring great people to their attention. It is time to return great individuals to the pedestal where they belong. Children and adolescent need to see that humans can and do a difference, they should learn that they have the ability to reshape life in a positive way. Through this, we can show our children that heroes are real people worthy of recognition and emulation.
