While this is taking place, the male partner will be asked to excuse himself to a private room to provide a sperm sample.

At this point, the laboratory takes over. The eggs are put into a Petri dish and put into an incubator that is a simulation of the conditions of the human body. After a certain time frame, the sperm is then introduced into the dish with the hope that fertilization will take place. Typically, the eggs will be checked on a regular basis to confirm fertilization. At that point, they will be monitored for an additional 1 -- 2 days. Now the eggs are implanted back into the uterus. Typically, there are two embryos implanted to increase the chances of success. After the implantation, there is a 21 day period when the woman is given drugs to put her into a state similar to short term menopause. This is to increase the chances of success.

If a subsequent pregnancy test is negative, the process is completed until it is successful. If it results in a pregnancy, the couple is then referred back to their regular doctor for traditional care by an obstetrician.
